Memory foam and pocket springs are popular mattress technologies, but they feel different. Understanding those differences helps you choose for comfort rather than relying on marketing labels.
What memory foam feels like
Memory foam responds to pressure and creates a contouring sensation around the body. Many side sleepers appreciate the cushioning around shoulders and hips. Some foams feel slower to respond when you change position, and temperature performance varies by construction.
How pocket springs work
A pocket-sprung mattress contains individual fabric-wrapped springs that respond to pressure separately. This construction can offer responsive support and reduce disturbance from a partner. Comfort also depends on the padding and materials above the spring unit.
Which is better for couples?
Movement isolation matters when sharing a bed. Memory foam can absorb motion effectively, while pocket springs can reduce movement transfer compared with connected spring systems. Size and firmness matter just as much.
What about hybrid mattresses?
Many mattresses combine springs with foam comfort layers. The aim is to balance cushioning and responsive support. A hybrid is not automatically better; compare the complete specification and preferred feel.
Is a higher spring count better?
Spring count alone cannot tell you whether a mattress is comfortable or durable. Consider spring design, upholstery, construction and your body weight. Review the manufacturer's care guidance as well.
Frequently asked questions
Is memory foam always warmer?
Not always. Temperature performance varies by foam formulation, cover and mattress design.
Are pocket springs good for couples?
They can be because springs respond independently.
Which is best for back sleepers?
Either may work when firmness and support suit the sleeper.
